Question 1.Write the fractions appropriately as additions or subtractions

Answer:

(a) 15+25=1+25=35\frac{1}{5} + \frac{2}{5} = \frac{{1 + 2}}{5} = \frac{3}{5}

(b) 5535=535=25\frac{5}{5} – \frac{3}{5} = \frac{{5 – 3}}{5} = \frac{2}{5}

(c) 26+36=2+36=56\frac{2}{6} + \frac{3}{6} = \frac{{2 + 3}}{6} = \frac{5}{6}

Question 2.Solve:

(a) 118+118\frac{1}{{18}} + \frac{1}{{18}}

(b) 815+315\frac{8}{{15}} + \frac{3}{{15}}

(c) 7757\frac{7}{7} – \frac{5}{7}

(d) 122+2122\frac{1}{{22}} + \frac{{21}}{{22}}

(e) 1215715\frac{{12}}{{15}} – \frac{7}{{15}}

(f) 58+38\frac{5}{8} + \frac{3}{8}

(g) 123(1=33)1 – \frac{2}{3}\left( {1 = \frac{3}{3}} \right)

(h) 14+04\frac{1}{4} + \frac{0}{4}

(i) 31253 – \frac{{12}}{5}

Answer:

(a) 118+118=1+118=218=19\frac{1}{18}+\frac{1}{18}=\frac{1+1}{18}=\frac{2}{18}=\frac{1}{9}

(b) 815+315=8+315=1115\frac{8}{15}+\frac{3}{15}=\frac{8+3}{15}=\frac{11}{15}

(c) 7757=757=27\frac{7}{7}-\frac{5}{7}=\frac{7-5}{7}=\frac{2}{7}

(d) 122+2122=1+2122=2222=1\frac{1}{22}+\frac{21}{22}=\frac{1+21}{22}=\frac{22}{22}=1

(e) 1215715=12715=515=13\frac{12}{15}-\frac{7}{15}=\frac{12-7}{15}=\frac{5}{15}=\frac{1}{3}

(f) 58+38=88=1\frac{5}{8}+\frac{3}{8}=\frac{8}{8}=1

(g) 123=3323=322=131-\frac{2}{3}=\frac{3}{3}-\frac{2}{3}=\frac{3-2}{2}=\frac{1}{3}

(h) 14+04=1+04=14\frac{1}{4}+\frac{0}{4}=\frac{1+0}{4}=\frac{1}{4}

(i) 3125=155125=15125=353-\frac{12}{5}=\frac{15}{5}-\frac{12}{5}=\frac{15-12}{5}=\frac{3}{5}

Question 3.Shubham painted 23\frac{2}{3} of the wall space in his room. His sister Madhavi helped and painted 13\frac{1}{3} of the wall space. How much did they paint together?

Answer:

Fraction of wall painted by Shubham = 23\frac{2}{3}

Fraction of wall painted by Madhavi = 13\frac{1}{3}

Total painting by both of them = 23+13=2+13=33=1\frac{2}{3}+\frac{1}{3}=\frac{2+1}{3}=\frac{3}{3}=1

Therefore, they painted complete wall.

Question 4.Fill in the missing fractions:

(a) 710 =310\frac{7}{{10}} – \boxed{{\text{ }}} = \frac{3}{{10}}

(b)  321=521\boxed{{\text{ }}} – \frac{3}{{21}} = \frac{5}{{21}}

(c)  36=36\boxed{{\text{ }}} – \frac{3}{6} = \frac{3}{6}

(d)  +527=1227\boxed{{\text{ }}} + \frac{5}{{27}} = \frac{{12}}{{27}}

Answer:

(a) 410\frac{4}{{10}}

(b) 821\frac{8}{{21}}

(c) 66\frac{6}{6}

(d) 727\frac{7}{{27}}

Question 5.Javed was given of a basket of oranges. What fraction of oranges was left in the basket?

Answer:

Total = 1

Fraction of Orange left = 1571 – \frac{5}{7}

= 7757=757=27\frac{7}{7} – \frac{5}{7} = \frac{{7 – 5}}{7} = \frac{2}{7}

Thus, 27\frac{2}{7} oranges was left in the basket.
